“I am writing to you as a supporter of the arts, deeply distressed by the continuous funding cuts to our Arts Institutions. The Arts aren’t a frivolity, but a testament to our shared cultural history. A culture now threatened by AI, and in need of more support than ever.
In 2023 the arts contributed a total of £10 billion to the UK economy across all creative industries. At the same time, local government funding for the arts has decreased dramatically, 48% to be exact in England (measured between 2009-2010 and 2022-2023).
As generative AI becomes increasingly normalized, so too is a rhetoric which considers the Arts dispensable. What makes the Arts meaningful isn’t simply the product which can be capitalized upon, but the process – which demands from its contributors an uncompromising sensitivity, and an unrelenting pursuit towards perfection. Every child deserves the opportunity to experience this joy, to become a student to this history and celebration of humanity.
We ask you to reconsider the importance of the arts in our cultural landscape, to impart on a new generation the privilege of an arts education unimpeded by financial barriers”
